TWO HOMERS PROPEL
SAHUARO INTO TITLE GAME
|
RAYMOND SUAREZ
Tucson Citizen

|
The Sahuaro bats couldn't be silenced this time.
Two home runs in the fourth inning off the bats of Rebecca Mullin and Breanna Beckel propelled the No. 7 Cougars to a 5-3 semifinal win over No. 3 Cienega on Wednesday night at Amphi High School.
The win avenged Sahuaro's no-hit loss to Cienega in last week's 4A Kino Region tournament championship game. More importantly, it put the Cougars in Friday's Class 4A Division I state championship game in Phoenix against defending champion Canyon del Oro.
"This was the best swing of my life,"
Beckel said of her two-run shot in the fourth. "I hit it and I didn't even know it was gone. I thought it was hitting the fence. I put my head down and I ran as fast as I could."....read

VIEW OF PITCHING
FOE AS EQUAL BOOST COUGARS
|
PHOENIX - The Sahuaro High softball team took batting practice at 10:30 a.m. Monday, and the main subject of discussion was Scottsdale Chaparral star pitcher Mackenzie Popescue.
The Cougars knew Popescue, the starting pitcher in Monday night's Class 4A division I quarterfinal game, was good, but Sahuaro coach
Steve Sanchez emphasized that she is human.
Seventh-seeded Sahuaro jumped on Popescue early, scoring three first-inning runs, and went on to eliminate No. 2 Chaparral (25-7) with a 6-0 victory at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.
Sahuaro (25-7) advances to Wednesday's semifinal against Cienega, which defeated Peoria 3-2 on Monday. The Sahuaro-Cienega
game will be played at a

SAHUARO SOFTBALL
STEALS CHAPARRAL'S THUNDER
|
By Kyle Odegard,
Tribune
 The
Scottsdale Chaparral
softball team had to
battle through
injuries all year to
claim the No. 2 seed
in the 4A-I state
tournament. All
that hard work was
derailed in five
minutes.
Seventh-seeded
Tucson Sahuaro
sprung for three
first-inning runs
and Kira White
put the clamps
on Chaparral's
offense in Sahuaro's
6-0 win in the
second round of the
state tournament
Monday night at the
Rose Mofford Sports
Complex in Phoenix.
White
tossed a four-hitter
with 13 strikeouts.
She struck out the
side in the second,
third and fourth
innings and has
allowed just two
earned runs all
year.
"We came out and
we weren't as crisp
as we wanted to be,"
Chaparral coach
Wes Little said.
"They're a great
team. Solid ballclub
with a good pitcher,
she's only a
sophomore. They're
going to have a lot
of success."

Tucson Sahuaro's softball team took batting practice at 10:30 a.m. Monday, and the main subject of discussion was Scottsdale Chaparral star pitcher Mackenzie Popescue, the opponent Monday night in the Class 4A Division I state tournament.
The team knew Popescue was good, but Sahuaro coach
Steve Sanchez emphasized that she is human, like everyone else, and that it was possible to defeat her.
Seventh-seeded Sahuaro jumped on Popescue early, scoring three first inning runs, and went on to eliminate No. 2 seed Chaparral with a 6-0 victory at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.

SAHUARO BLANKS
SABINO IN KINO SEMIS

When Sahuaro second baseman
Kayla Basye stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday, she did not feel too much pressure.
Her team already had a three-run lead in its 4A Kino Region semifinal game against arch-rival Sabino, one run coming earlier in the fifth.
Then, with a runner on base, Basye blasted a home run to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead that stood up for the rest of the game.
"It felt really good to hit it, but one home run doesn't make a game," Basye said. "That was just a happy ending."
A pitchers' duel for the first half of the game, it was anyone's guess which pitcher would be the first to falter: Sahuaro's
Kira White or Sabino's Kaity Sitzman.

COUGAR'S WHITE
1-HITS SABERCATS IN SEMIS

GEOFF GRAMMER
Tucson Citizen

Sahuaro pitcher Kira White says
she's had better games than Monday's
one-hit shutout of Sabino in the Class
4A Kino Region semifinals. With a few
no-hitters under her belt, a
19-strikeout performance earlier this
season and some solid pitching in last
year's state tournament, maybe she's
right.
But you'd be hard-pressed trying to
convince the Sabino lineup White
can perform much better than she did
Monday in Sahuaro's 5-0 win over the
Sabercats at Amphi High School. Her
Cougar teammates were also impressed.
"This is one of the best games I've
ever seen her pitch," said Sahuaro
senior Kayla Basye, whose two-run
homer in the fifth helped close the door
on Sabino. "She didn't lose control or
get distracted if someone got on (base).
She kept her composure and said, 'All
right, I'm going to get this next girl.'
And you could just tell, when that
happened, there was no doubt she was
going to get her out."
White (11-3) did her best work when Sabino had runners on base. "I just
focused on getting the out at the plate
and not worrying about anything else,"
White said. "When the defense is playing
like that behind me, it's easier on me
to just worry about the hitter at the
plate." ....read

At Apache Junction, Kira White threw her second consecutive no-hitter and fourth of the season to lead Sahuaro to a nonregion victory.
White (6-1) struck out a career-high 18 and has now held teams hitless in her last 17 innings.
"My curveball and screwball were working really well," the sophomore ace said. "And I go out there with a strategy that everyone is equal to the team's (best) hitter."
Kayla Basye hit a home run for Sahuaro (11-4), which posted its eighth shutout of the season....read
